A Tribute to
" Legendary Uno"
"If these dogs only knew what a difference they make. Certainly, there's nothing that can replace the precision of a dog's nose—and absolutely nothing that can replace a dog's heart."
— Bob Sessions, rescue worker, Federal Emergency Management Agency
UNO...
His name does say it all , he was just ONE, but he has touched many, even us!! we never got the honor to meet him but we have a blessing from him and that is his "granddaughter" and now his offsprings.
We have a piece of him and will never let him or his memory die. Through his offspring he will live on. We were blessed to hear his story from his owner Pat and what a story it was. She said he had tremendous working abilities and consistently scored well during the tracking, obedience, and protection work. He had a heart that wouldn't quit.
"Uno" was one of a handful of dogs in the United States certified as a Crisis Response Dog.
He was requested by the American Red Cross to come, with his owners/handlers (Pat & Bill Gartman) to Ground Zero and work with the Red Cross during that tragic time following September 11, 2001.
He was and always will be "The total dog."
His memory will live on with his family and friends, also with his bloodlines. He will be missed.
You will be missed great friend by many...!!!!

In Loving Memory
Sept 14, 1996 - Feb 11, 2010
The December 2001 edition of our National magazine "The Quarterly National Review" carried the brilliant story of Uno the German Shepherd Dog. Uno was involved with helping out after the tragedy of New York September 11 2001. He was nominated for a 'Dog of the Year' award.
The article is reprinted on the following pages kind permission from the Editor of the GSDCA Quarterly National Review. We have recently made contact with Uno's owner Pat and she gives us this update: "Uno was the grand Marshall in a parade which we discovered that he is quite the 'ham'; he loved the float, the crowds of people.
He waved at the crowds and smiled the whole time! He has been nominated as 'Dog of the Year' for the American Kennel Club ACE Awards. We feel very honoured by this award nomination”.

"Uno" Crisis Response Dog
An estimated 300 Search and Rescue Dogs and their handlers offered their services to the recovery efforts at The World Trade Center. The events of September 11 prompted the largest response of United States Urban Search and Rescue in the history of the FEMA network. Twenty-four of the twenty-eight FEMA Urban Search and Rescue teams were deployed, with twenty teams working at the World Trade Center and four in Washington.
The FEMA teams, consisting of four dogs per team, represented nineteen states. The New York City Police K9 Unit deployed all of its German Shepherd Dogs for the grueling task of finding victims in the rubble. In addition to official, government sponsored teams, several volunteer Search and Rescue Dog teams arrived from all over the world to help with the Search and Recovery efforts.
Search and Rescue dogs represent a variety of breeds, the most common of which are German Shepherd Dogs, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers.
Uno was nominated for a 'Dog of the Year' Award in 2001.
